A Gurgaon voter? Wait for the call on your cellphone anytime

Gurgaon, June 8: TAKING a leaf out of former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s book, Gurgaon administration has decided to use recorded voice messages and SMSes to ensure public participation in the campaign for correction of entries and inclusion of names in electoral rolls for enrolment of eligible voters in Gurgaon.

Under the campaign, the first phase of which begins on June 15, SDM Gurgaon has been asked to contact mobile phone companies and ask them to send SMS to all mobile phone owners in Gurgaon city informing the people about the voters enrolment campaign.

‘‘Along with the SMSes, phone calls playing a pre-recorded voice-message from Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner, who is also the District Election Officer, will be made to mobile-users in the city,’’ said District Public Relations Officer R.S. Dahiya. The DPRO has also been asked to get the message telecast through local cable channels.

The administration has further decided to get advertisements published in newspapers requesting the residents to verify their status in the electoral list.

Further, tehsildar (Elections) will supply a copy of voters-list of all RWAs, municipal councillors and NGOs free-of-cost and would also install two helplines from which the residents may verify the status of their enrolment.

Gurgaon administration had received a lot of flak prior to the Lok Sabha elections for allegedly failing to enroll a large number of voters living in the newly-developed colonies of the city.

Following the completion of the publicity campaign, the second phase from July 1 to July 31 would see the actual enrolment of voters in the city.

Work for voter photo ID card will begin on July 1. Government agency HARTRON is being requested to constitute a minimum of 10 teams that will be stationed at 10 pre-publicised locations for the purpose of online photography and distribution of ID cards.
